I'm not sure if you can go past ge-0/0/9 (10 interfaces + the 2 initial links for the control plane link between VCP and vPFE images), but you can try. You can get away with giving vMX 2 gigs of memory and 1 vCPU.

The emulated interfaces are supposed to be virtio, but when you're setting it up in GNS3 since you're labbing, I recommend just setting it up with e1000 interfaces. Initialize a VCP image in KVM(you can do it with virt-manager for those of you not comfortable with CLI) This is the only one you need to worry about if you are only concerning yourself with basic lab testing (which means don't worry about the vPFE/vPFE-lite images.or the configuration orchestration script that comes with the download). You want to work with the VCP (virtual control plane.aka the RE) image, which is the JUNOS CLI you would be familiar with.

Under a single hypervisor, this emulates the normal connection between the PFE and the control plane (the RE) links in Juniper physical boxes (which you shouldn't normally see, but if I recall correctly, you can see it via cli 'll have like a 172.x.x.x static IP), but someone feel free to correct me if I am wrong. I believe the point of having a VCP image connect to a vPFE instance is to eventually emulate distributed/multiple line cards across multiple hypervisors. 'ge-x/x/x' interfaces would be connected via the vPFE image interfaces.

To get it working properly for production, it requires you to instantiate a vPFE/vPFE-lite VM (packet forwarding engine for real world traffic loads.leverages DPDK libraries) which you connect virtually to a VCP image (there's a specific interface you have to link it up to, but I forget the name of the interface).
